Hi, my name's Jacob. I make concise videos about the technical side of game development.
I'm currently working on my own game: Astortion.
It's a minimalistic, atmospheric puzzle-platformer that revolves around gravity.
You can wishlist it on Steam:

Additional Information 1. 0:56 Virtual Memory While it is not possible to fit all of that data into physical RAM, the operating system could theoretically use virtual memory to share the load with secondary memory (HDD, SDD). This would still not be practical since the usual swapping space is much smaller than 100GB and requesting memory that's not currently in RAM would cause the game to freez...

my texture turned black after I added a shader, what should I do?
We did something similar in a project I worked on a while back, although you took it to much closer level to actual pixel art. In our case, we merely pre-rendered 3D models as 2D sprites for our product. Yet we still wanted the flexibility of being able to change a single source texture to change the look of the resulting, rasterized 2D sprite. So instead of rasterizing the colors of the 3D model, we rasterized the texture coordinates (along with a normal map for some dynamic lighting effects). Then our 2D engine still performed the texel look-ups on the fly giving us that flexibility of changing the source texture. To take this further to actually hand-drawing pixel art directly using texture coordinates is a really neat idea! While it seems a bit laborious to draw the frames of animation by hand this way, this seems like a great way to me to unify art direction with two or more artists working on animating the same character by thinking of what texels from the source image they're mapping to for a particular frame of animation.
Will there be any sources of your work on Unity open for public access? It's just that every video of you creating various rendering related things has been very interesting and I've always wanted to see how it works there in the code
Please provide a full tutorial, I'm lost, man!
Bro this is amazing oh my god
"a dire result of my childhood minecraft addiction" real as FUCK
Let's Go, more Astortion progress
:3
Big N++ vibes too
reminds me of the "N game"
I'd like to see and example of actual game code which uses this technique. Without a concrete example, it's a bit hard to see real potential in this
Great vid
Can’t wait for the video about asset pipeline and getting hot reload working 🥵
6:02 I would just like to comment that I love how pixel art has evolved- it’s beautiful how it’s a freedom of expression for art that came from a restriction.
Is there a program similar to the one you made to hot update blender models to unity during runtime? It would help my workflow very much
Dude, this game is beautiful. I’m so excited for the demo! I might become a patron, idk if I can wait
0:45 how does one simply "add pixelation"?
I feel like ive watched a devlog about this a long time ago about rotation of the character or something, i found it very interesting, so im confused how devlog 0 came out 2 weeks ago..... lol Ok if i waiting for the ad to end it would of been explained... hahaa
Idea: instead of making items float near you, they actually gravitate to you, like the gravity points
Really thought that said astarion and thought that was astarion and shadowheart on the thumbnail
love the minimalist look of the game now, the project definitely looks awesome
Wait, you're using Bevy now? Welcome to the club!
Reminds me of a crashh test dummy
make gravity assists because that would be really fun
Yeah! I can play this on an SD CRT TV then.
What tool you use to animation your code in video?
Pixel fog is damn beautiful
The skull emoji reaction on the speedrun 💀😂
Cool to see you doing devlogs again! You're one of the main reasons I started making my own!
Hell yeah
I'm glad you've come back to the game. It looks brilliant, and I especially like how you've added a variety of mechanics in now. Good luck with the project!
Can anyone please share a tutorial video playlist or a creator to make a game like this in unity
exciting!
Does this cap sprite sizes to 225x225 since the lookup can't reference an red/green value greater? Or could you somehow multiply them by the blue value to access a greater range?
This is so amazing!!!!
Holy hell he's back
so sweet ❤
I may as well mention, I did love the old video style where the game dev was just a playground for whatever you were interested in making a video about. But congrats on making real progress, I'm looking forward to seeing more of the levels take shape.
The visual style is so strong, it's amazing how some simple conventions make everything feel cohesive.
testicular astortion
Bevy is a good choice. It was something I considered. I want to have first-class modding support (because it has even benefits for regular development), and that seems to be difficult to do at the moment in rust. That's pretty much all it came down to for me. There are work arounds with things like web assembly and lua or whatever, but it ends up forcing you to push that stuff through a C-API at some point, which seems like busy work to me. Also I realized that my goal of producing a finished game is not the part that is most exciting to me. I like the DIY spirit, and I am very opinionated about software, so I want to do a lot of it myself. and for me the journey is more fun than the idea of finishing it. Getting away from Unity is probably a win.
eyyyyy astortion is back
you should check out elypse if you want some inspiration regarding movement mechanics and how variety supports fun movement
low res lesbians <3
Yay! You are finally back! I learned a lot about rendering from you :)
Awesome stuff cooking, best of luck!
Always happy to see some more Astortion!
Aside from the gameplay changes, the UI changes really had a big impact on the feel of everything I think. It's really starting to feel like a uniquely "aarthificial" game
I've never quite been big brained enough to follow most of these devlogs (you're doing some really clever stuff), but I do know animation and just- generally holy heck? The character acting you pull off with these itty bitty guys is nuts
Looking forward to playing the full game !!
